Run, Run, Run

The end of the year always brings running events.  We had the elementary school fundraiser, Race for Education.  The middle school also has Track and Field Day.  It's very fun for me to always watch, run, and cheer like a maniac.

It's almost like I love to be the loudest, craziest, cheerer just to embarrass my kids.  Somehow it bonds me to them even more.  They may be embarrassed, but I have convinced myself they secretly love it!

We'll never know for sure.  Well maybe we will, but it won't be for another 30 years, in the midst of their midlife crisis, I'll get to hear about all the ways I failed them as a parent. Probably not, but I'm mentally preparing myself just in case.

Run Forest Run

We are a family of runners.  It's official.  I love it.  It makes me happy.  It's the one habit I've picked up in my adult life that has served me well.  In my observations, the people who learned to run and love it youngest in life (i.e. high school) are the most successful in a ton of areas not just running.

So, it makes my heart happy that Isa picked it up easily and loves Cross Country and Track.  Wyatt although not a eager runner is still decent in a sprint.  Issac loves the distances runs, and Kody is known on his baseball team for being the fastest base runner, especially considering he is the shortest.  Each time he rounds the bases, we'd hear murmurs in the crowd of look how fast that kid is.

Nothing showcases running more than the end of year jazz like Race for Education - our school's one fundraiser - and Track and Field Day at the middle school.  Issac tied for the most laps run on RACE day along with another boy and one little girl in the whole elementary school running 3.5 miles in about 30ish minutes.  They ran for 40 total, but had a Rita's Italian ice break.

Likewise on track and field day, the students can pick their events.  Wyatt, the not eager runner, will pick the shortest events the 50M, 75M, 100M races.  Well his teacher helped relocate him to pick up the 200M as well - the first year we did these.  And then each class has an A relay team and a B relay team.  The first four fastest run as the A team, the next four as the B team.  Well Wyatt's class had a no show and so lucky for him (insert his eye roll here) his teacher asked him to run on both relay teams.  He did great.  Plus with the start of his soccer career this fall, I'm hoping he becomes ever more of a runner.  Fingers crossed.

Bleck, Bleck, Bleck

I started the day really early, even though the kids had off school.  I knew it would be just that busy.  So I headed out for a quick morning run.  20 minutes, couldn't even spare 30 - but I got 2.5 miles in.  I arrived back home just in time for our monthly foster visit/home inspect.  Afterwards, I did the quickest shower and wardrobe change before heading to the dentist with a kid in tow.  Stopped on the way home for party supplies and milk and cereal - no groceries were in the house, since we had been gone ten days - I needed something to tie us over.

Last minute detour trip to library to return some overdue books and pick up a prize one of my kids had won.  Get home to some boys being delivered.  (10) 9&10 year old boys descended on our house for a birthday party.  Pizza and junk food filled lunch and then to the movies in two cars.  After the movie a dead battery that couldn't be jumped force 12 of us into my 8-seater Honda Pilot.  Glad we're all friends here.

After dropping off each of the boys at their homes, we did world's fastest turn around to pick up two kids for their first of many Christmas Orchestra Ensemble Performances around town.  Got them set up, while Travis went to auto parts store.  He returned for us to head back to theater to change out the battery.  Four minute battery swap, he is a super stud, and a return trip to pick up kids who are finishing up.  All home to cram in bed times, belated all be it, a late dinner of a tuna fish sandwich to keep me from starving to death as two pieces of pizza was all I had eaten all day.

Finally a rewarding donut run to end the evening.  Yes I eat my stress away.  But you see I run for sanity in the morning and eat for relief in the evening.  It's why I can start tomorrow as energetic and chipper as I did today and most days - running and donuts.  This week/month is gonna be crazy.  If only I could find a way to make my donut costs this month tax deductible!

Run, Run As Fast As You Can

Running wasn't my thing.  I swear it wasn't.  But it did drop the pounds every time I did it. Then it became an outlet, a constant steadying ritual of my day.  Then it became addictive.  Then it became a lifestyle choice; one that I happily am passing down to my kids.

So I bring you Marathon Clubs, Rock N' Glow 5K's, Race for Education and other assorted running events that some or all of my kids have been participating in this past month.  I'm happy it's something we do together.  I'm happy they love the thing I love.

Run, Bella, Run

After years of artistic endeavors and rebuffing all of my suggestions that Bella try a sport, this year she decided she wanted to run Cross Country.  Of all the sports to start with???  But hoo-rah!  The first two or three weeks were rough, but she has settled into it and loves it.  Each meet she gets faster and faster.  Now there is talk of running Track in the spring and next year's season.  She may just have turned into a athlete after all.
In other news, I decided I wanted to try a speed run to see if I could run as fast as her still.  Well I did 3 miles in 25:18.  Not too shabby.  But now I hurt!  I think it may be final.  She may just be better than me.  Start midlife crisis, now! :)

It's a Type of Sickness

If anyone would have told me a year ago, I would love running - I would have told them to check themselves into a mental hospital, for serious reals.  Despite playing many sports throughout my middle, high school and college years and having various levels of success, I never got that love for running that some people have or working out for that matter.

Let's not confuse things here, I mean I love to win.  I am fiercely competitive if need be, and so if you give me a ball and tell me the purpose is to put it in that goal or to beat five other people from a start line to a finish line well I'll do it almost every time and enjoy it thoroughly.  But working out for working out sake I didn't enjoy until around 2004 after the birth of my second child.  With my changing body shape and size I felt not like me and so I hit our local gym up, 24 Hour Fitness - at the time, for a membership.

I loved classes and the mixture of social interaction and feeling of strength.  I love watching everyone as I work out, helping to push me a little further than I might go independently if I didn't see them in the 270 degree mirror surround.  I liked the way I felt after my workout too.  It was a feeling I had started to forget a bit.  I ran with some loose regularity and through each of my successive two pregnancies, but it was not something I ever enjoyed.

Fast forward another 7 years and you will find that after a move, a period of physical inactivity and a much sparser selection in nearby gyms in the area, that when one opened it my very own town I was among the first to enroll and get a membership.  Once again I gravitated towards the classes starting with Zumba and working my way through some newer and tougher ones.  The spin classroom when first starting out is a black lit, techno color, very loud death coffin.  I grew stronger, I grew tougher and I earned the respect of my gym peers - not only for my awesome fitness moves, but by my ability to sing throughout almost every class and to without abandon wear a leotard and leg warmers for an 80's throwback week.

Fast forward another two years and the local gym hit a bump.  Financially some things weren't working out as they hoped.  As a result they had to cut class schedules extensively, charge extra for the remaining ones and eliminate child care. This was no longer a concern for me now that my children were all school age, but my demographic was instantly gymless because most of my cohorts needed the childcare and didn't know how to work out without an instructor.

I decided to hit the treadmill.  I knew from past experience that it really was a good workout, that I really could cut weight and it would be the best thing for me.  I did lots of little runs here and there and around the town.  But still hated the gym and running most every day.  But when a fellow gym rat continued to bug me about joining her at an upcoming half marathon - I started to consider it.  It may just be the motivation I needed to actually run instead of jog on the revolving belt loop called a treadmill.  After some midnight texting and a special promotion on runners day or some other mostly made up holiday I signed up.

After a couple of group runs, I felt dumb for having done so.  I recruited another friend to join me in my torture.  But I continued to train.  Days turned to weeks, turned to months.  My miles increased and I still felt the torture.  I told my husband, "No matter what I say, never let me run another half marathon again."  People told me I would learn to love it.  I knew they were crazy.  One month before my half marathon and after overcoming my fear of running outside, I really started to like the long run.  It wasn't the same kind of like I have for donuts or reading a book or taking a nap - some of my other favorite things.  But I like how strong I felt, how disciplined I had become.  And I could finally see my hard work and training coming together.

And so here I am 6 months later, mentally committed to running every spring and fall a half marathon, almost 20 pounds light - who knew I had turned into such a chubbo, because I promise I still don't look that fantastic - and almost loving running.  I miss it the days I can't fit it in.  It's a lot easier now days too.  Each morning it's a conscious decision, but I guess I've developed my own kind of love for this sport.  And so every time I hear someone tell me they don't know how I do it, how they could never do it, I think of myself and how much difference 6 months can make.  I know better than to tell them they will love it too, if they stick with it.  Because let's be honest - I never believed anyone before when they told me the very same thing.  And that's how I know running is a sickness, a disease if you will.  You may not want it, but once you catch it there's no way to get rid of it.  It stays with you.

Rock N' Glow 5K

Manheim is the coolest town ever.  Have I mentioned that before.  If not, here it is for the record.  So this year our town did a Rock N' Glow 5K run to support the Manheim Downtown Development Group, which hosts community events to increase tourism and foot traffic as well as unify the community and promote family fun events.

There was a 1 mile race and a 5K.  All of the kids wanted to join me on the 5K, even though it was the evening of Bella's last musical performance after three days of performing multiple shows.
I wasn't convinced she was up to pushing herself that hard and to this point she had been my main running companion.  I told the kids that they could all run the 1 mile and then if they still felt good I would let them run the 5K with me which didn't even start until 9pm.  Needless to say the 1 mile race went well.  The kids surprised me and J proved his athletic/running prowess coming in 4th place.  I still felt guilty I had held him back with the rest of us for the first quarter mile.  I know he totally could have won first place.

After the 1 miler, Issac and Kody were content to not run the 5K.  Wyatt and J wanted to both run it.  And Bella was happy to watch the boys since she was on the fence in terms of tiredness anyway.  Plus the following week was field day and she had qualified to run the mile and so felt like she had ample opportunity to run in the near future.

I only had 1 criteria for racing with me, no walking.  I told them I didn't care how slow we had to run, but we needed to keep the running gait up the entire time.  Well they proved to be up to the challenge.  Wyatt struggled almost completely silently and later told Travis he had cried during part of the run, but that he knew he could push himself to do harder things than he had to this point.  I felt awful that he cried and that it was such a struggle, but so proud that he pushed through.  Because of  the confidence from doing that hard thing, he runs more often with me now.  J is my newest partner in running.  He is way faster than me, but hasn't built up the distance yet.

Sadly Bella hasn't run with me since.  But where she has left off, Kody has picked up.  And just from this summer he has gotten way faster, 2 miles in 20 minutes.  He is only five and pint size so I consider that awesome.  From this awesome event, we now have family bonding through running.  I love that this healthy lifestyle now seems super cool to my kids.  I can't wait for next year!

Some More

Lately I have been running, running and running some more.  In January, Manheim got a gym this after a three year stint with nothing.  Having been a gym goer almost all my life, these 3 years were rough.  The first day they accepted memberships, I marched myself right in there and signed my year contract.  It's been happily ever after since.  Well sort of.

I don't mind working out, in fact, I love it.  But I have never been the world's best, fastest, or willing runner.  But I had a goal here.  I wanted to lose 20 lbs this year.  And anyone knows that when push comes to shove it is all about running to slim down.  Well at least that is what I have been told.

So now I run.  I run when I feel good, when I don't want to, and before and after I have worked out in other the ways that I like to.  I run everyday Monday thru Friday.  So now three and a half months in how much weight have I lost.  Well 1 lb.  Yeah it's frustrating and it sucks.  But I have lost inches so I haven't despaired entirely only partially.

But you know what I discovered?  No it is not that I love to run. I still sort of hate it.  But that I am learning to enjoy certain aspects of running.  I am learning to enjoy the mind numbing time spent on the treadmill.  Because truly some days I think of nothing for that hour except for stepping one foot in front of the other.  I am learning to enjoy competing against myself to run further than I have the day, week, and month before.  Tuesday that was 8.25 miles in 84 minutes and 50 some seconds.   Yesterday, when I had less time to run I ran for speed, 1.25 miles in 10 minutes even.  That's an 8 minute flat mile folks.  So to realize I am achieving goals I haven't met since high school is awesome.  And that in and of itself sort of makes me happy about the running, even if I am not happy about the actual running.
